They were constructed with low density seating and a toilet in each unit, they were constructed to work local branch lines, therefore were gangwayed within the unit to allow the conductor-guard to pass through collecting fares. During the 1960s the Class 108s made regular appearances on services around Cambridge.
The Class 108s were refurbished in the 1970s, and again in the late 1980s with a number of units operating within the former Network South East area, particularly the Gospal Oak to Barking Route. Class 108s were withdrawn in the 1990s as new Sprinter and Turbo units went into services - the last 108 was withdrawn from service by November 1993, since then over 50 vehicles of this class have passed into preservation.
