2019 is an important year for the miniature railway. Our old line has been closed and dismantled and a brand new railway is under construction in the Orchard so our little trains will continue to give visitor rides in future.
Work has been progressing well and we will announce a launch date as soon as possible; we plan to open the new railway in stages, with the first section adjacent to the children’s playground. Two special locomotives, steam engine ‘Frederick’ and electric loco ‘Ricardo Lampwick’ will be retained from the old railway and new coaches and locomotives will be added as the railway expands.
The old miniature railway was built in the 1990s by a number of our volunteers and featured two stations, Orchard Lane and Lake View. Much of the stock first used was donated from the Moors Valley Railway in the New Forest. Due to the popularity of our little trains, expansion has long been considered and now, during 2018/19, we are building a longer line with capacity to run more and longer trains.
When the railway re-opens, you can drive one of our battery locomotives on the miniature railway for just £5. This will be available on all days when the miniature railway is in operation (except Days Out With Thomas, sorry) and includes a brief instruction session, following which you get to drive three round trips. Your family can even ride on the train with you driving.
No booking is necessary, just turn up. Minimum age 16, suitable for anybody of average fitness.
