Sun 9th July sees an all out celebration of the age of steam and we’re offering unlimited rides behind historic steam locomotives from our collection as well as the chance to experience first hand being a guard, signalman or crossing keeper under the supervision of our friendly volunteers.
In our brand new Thompson Centre, we’ll be showing the newly digitised British Film Institute archive, Britain On Film, Railways (83 mins), a new collection of rare archive films charting the history of the UK’s railways and bringing home the romance offered by train travel across the country in the early 20th century. Sourced from the national and regional archives and newly digitised this is a nostalgic and evocative collection of films which document not just the glories of the railway, but also the changing social, political and economic climates of the 20th century.
